Eleventh of Every Month

Fri, 02/26/2010 - 02:46

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

In the absence of sane leadership, we intend to do what people have always done to effect positive change: we will mobilize in massive numbers. On the Eleventh Day of Every Month, we call on activists everywhere to take to the streets in the name of truth. In every town and every city - and by any nonviolent means necessary - we will reach out together to our fellow citizens and spread the word!

9/11 Truth for Peace Freeway Blogging

Fri, 02/26/2010 - 02:41

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

This will be the fourth time we have formally organized a freeway blogging action! For newcomers, any veteran blogger will tell you that this is a great way to get the word out to massive numbers - and remind yourself and others that we are not alone. The goal behind this action is to take over the Berkeley pedestrian overpass with banners of peace, truth, justice, accountability, etc... There are a few banners that some activists already have ("9/11 Truth for Peace", and "Expose the 9/11 Cover-Up" for example), but feel free to create and bring your own (just make sure it is visible!). Hopefully, we will be able transform this outing into a monthly action to take place alongside our regular street actions. V for Visibility

John Perkins: Economic Crisis - The Hit Men Strike Home

Tue, 01/26/2010 - 05:52

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

Monday, February 22, 7:00 PM John Perkins: Economic Crisis: the Hit Men Strike Home--What Next and How to Deal with It Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek 94596 The current crisis is a classic hit by economic hit men (EHM) - except this time the victims are us. Drawing on personal experiences described in his blockbuster books, John Perkins explains how tools honed during the past four decades in developing countries are enabling the extremely rich to purchase businesses and real estate at fire sale prices; defend abolition of health care, education, and other social programs; and justify privatization of the public sector. However, crises offer opportunities. Perkins presents a plan for transforming the economy and describes ways each of us can employ our individual passions and skills to not only prosper but also create a world we will be proud to pass on to future generations. John Perkins is the bestselling author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, The Secret History of the American Empire, and most recently Hoodwinked: An Economic Hit Man Reveals Why the World Financial Markets Imploded--and What We Need to Do to Remake Them. March & Rally - U.S. Out of Afghanistan and Iraq Now!

Sun, 01/24/2010 - 20:43

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

Call to action on March 20, 2010 U.S. Out of Afghanistan and Iraq Now! Free Palestine Money for health care, jobs and education! U.S. Hands Off Latin America End foreign occupation of Haiti, reparations for Haiti San Francisco March and Rally Saturday, March 20, 2010 11 a.m. Civic Center Plaza People from all over the country are organizing to converge on Washington, D.C., and on the West Coast to demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all U.S. and NATO forces from Afghanistan and Iraq. On Saturday, March 20, 2010, there will be a massive National March & Rally in D.C. There will be coinciding mass marches on March 20 in San Francisco at Civic Center Plaza, 11am and in Los Angeles. We will march together to say “No Colonial-type Wars and Occupations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine!” We will march together to say “No War Against Iran!” We will march together to say “No War for Empire Anywhere!” Instead of war, we will demand funds so that every person can have a job, free and universal health care, decent schools, and affordable housing. March 20 is the seventh anniversary of the criminal war of aggression launched by Bush and Cheney against Iraq. One million or more Iraqis have died. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops have lost their lives or been maimed, and continue to suffer a whole host of enduring problems from this terrible war. This is the time for united action. The slogans on banners may differ, but all those who carry them should be marching shoulder to shoulder. Killing and dying to avoid the perception of defeat Bush is gone, but the war and occupation in Iraq go on. The Pentagon is demanding a widening of the war in Afghanistan. They project an endless war with shifting battlefields. And a “single-payer” war budget that only grows larger and larger each year. We must act. Both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were predicated on the imperial fantasy that the U.S. could create stable, proxy colonial-type governments in both countries. They were to serve as an extension of “American” power in these strategic and resource-rich regions. That fantasy has been destroyed. Now U.S. troops are being sent to kill or be killed so that the politicians in uniform (“the generals and admirals”) and those in three-piece suits (“our elected officials”) can avoid taking responsibility for a military setback in wars that should have never been started. Their military ambitions are now reduced to avoiding the appearance of defeat. That is exactly what happened in Vietnam! Avoiding defeat, or the perception of defeat, was the goal Nixon and Kissinger set for themselves when they took office in 1969. For this noble cause, another 30,000 young GIs perished before the inevitable troop pullout from Vietnam in 1973. The number of Vietnamese killed between 1969 and 1973 was greater by many hundreds of thousands. All of us can make the difference—progress and change comes from the streets and from the grassroots. The people went to the polls in 2008, and the enthusiasm and desire for change after eight years of the Bush regime was the dominant cause that led to election of a big Democratic Party majority in both Houses of Congress and the election of Barack Obama to the White House. But it should now be obvious to all that waiting for politicians to bring real change—on any front—is simply a prescription for passivity by progressives and an invitation to the array of corporate interests from military contractors to the banks, to big oil, to the health insurance giants that dominate the political life of the country. These corporate interests work around the clock to frustrate efforts for real change, and they are the guiding hand behind the recent street mobilizations of the ultra-right. It is up to us to act. If people had waited for politicians to do the right thing, there would have never been a Civil Rights Act, or unions, women’s rights, an end to the Vietnam war or any of the profound social achievements and basic rights that people cherish. It is time to be back in the streets. Organizing centers are being set up in cities and towns throughout the country. The initiators of the March 20 National Marches include: the ANSWER Coalition; Muslim American Society Freedom; National Council of Arab Americans; Cynthia McKinney; Malik Rahim, co-founder of Common Ground Collective; Ramsey Clark; Cindy Sheehan; Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK; Deborah Sweet, Director, World Can’t Wait; Mike Ferner, President, Veterans for Peace; Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition; Heidi Boghosian, Executive Director, National Lawyers Guild; Ron Kovic, author of “Born on the 4th of July”; Juan Jose Gutierrez, Director, Latino Movement USA; Col. Ann Wright (ret.); March Forward!; Partnership for Civil Justice; Palestinian American Women Association; Alliance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines; Alliance for Global Justice; Claudia de la Cruz, Pastor, Iglesia San Romero de Las Americas-UCC; Phil Portluck, Social Justice Ministry, Covenant Baptist Church, D.C.; Blase & Theresa Bonpane, Office of the Americas; Coalition for Peace and Democracy in Honduras; Comite Pro-Democracia en Mexico; Frente Unido de los Pueblos Americanos; Comites de Base FMLN, Los Angeles; Free Palestine Alliance; GABRIELA Network; Justice for Filipino American Veterans; KmB Pro-People Youth; Students Fight Back; Jim Lafferty, Executive Director, National Lawyers Guild - LA Chapter; LEF Foundation; National Coalition to Free the Angola 3; Community Futures Collective; Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival; Companeros del Barrio; Barrio Unido for Full and Unconditional Amnesty. CONFRONT John Yoo About Justifying Torture

Sun, 01/24/2010 - 20:18

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

Posted April 1, 2008 8:30 PM The Swamp by James Oliphant The Justice Department late Tuesday released a declassified 2003 memorandum long sought by congressional Democrats and other administration critics that outlines the government's legal justification for harsh interrogation techniques used by the military against captured enemy combatants outside the United States. (Here are part one and part two of the memo.) The memo, written by John Yoo, then a key architect of legal policy in the wake of 9/11, dismisses several legal impediments to the use of extreme techniques. Yoo was long a proponent of an aggressive approach in the war against terrorism and a believer in executive branch authority. But the memo was withdrawn as formal government policy less than a year after it was written. In the March 14, 2003 memo, Yoo says the Constitution was not in play with regard to the interrogations because the Fifth Amendment (which provides for due process of law) and the Eighth Amendment (which prevents the government from employing cruel and usual punishment) does "not extend to alien enemy combatants held abroad.": The memo goes on to explain that federal criminal statutes regarding assault and other crimes against the body don't apply to authorized military interrogations overseas and that statutes that do apply to the conduct of U.S. officials abroad pertaining to war crimes and torture establish a limited obligation on the part of interrogators to refrain from bodily harm. It also defines the United States' obligations under the United Nations Convention Against Torture and other international treaties prohibiting torture to be confined to ensuring that interrogators do not apply "cruel and unusual punishment" as defined by American constitutional law, regardless of differing international standards. And it restates the oft-repeated view held by administration officals that the Geneva Conventions, which governs the treatment of prisoners of war, does not apply to members of al Qaeda and the Taliban. The memo also reflected Yoo's belief in that the executive branch had the inherent authority during wartime to obtain information by necessarily hazardous means: "If a government defendant were to harm an enemy combatant during an interrogation in a manner that might arguably violate a criminal prohibition, he would be doing so in order to prevent further attacks on the United States by the al Qaeda terrorist network," Yoo wrote. "In that case, we believe that he could argue that the executive branch's constitutional authority to protect the nation from attack justified his actions." It was during 2003, while the memo was operative, that guards and other military personnel committed the abuses of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in Baghdad, Iraq. The memo was withdrawn shortly thereafter, but before those abuses came to light. The memo was prepared by Yoo for William Haynes, then the Pentagon's general counsel and another key player in the administration's legal strategy. It was declassified Monday by Haynes' acting successor, Daniel Dell' Orto. Yoo is now a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has repeatedly asked the Justice Department to release the memo and others like it, had this to say Tuesday evening: It has been more than four months since I asked the White House – again – to declassify the secret Justice Department opinions on interrogation practices. Today’s declassification of one such memo is a small step forward, but in no way fulfills those requests. The administration continues to shield several memos even from members of Congress. The memo they have declassified today reflects the expansive view of executive power that has been the hallmark of this administration. It is no wonder that this memo, like the now-infamous “Bybee memo”, could not withstand scrutiny and had to be withdrawn. Like the “Bybee memo”, this memo seeks to find ways to avoid legal restrictions and accountability on torture and threatens our country’s status as a beacon of human rights around the world. BUSH TORTURE POLICY: John Yoo and David Addington @ Congress http://www.youtube.co... Crisis and Command: Presidential Power in the 21st Century John Yoo, Law Professor, UC Berkeley; Author, Crisis and Command At the Department of Justice, Yoo played a large and controversial role in shaping the Bush administration's policy in the war on terrorism, arguing that prisoner of war status under the Geneva Conventions does not apply to "enemy combatants." He further asserted executive authority to undertake "enhanced interrogation techniques" regarded as torture by the current Justice Department. Yoo will trace the history of presidential power. Location: SF Club Office Time: 5:15 p.m. check-in, 6 p.m. program Cost: $12 members, $18 non-members Also know: Attendees subject to search. In association with the International Relations MLF.

* Eleventh of Every Month *

Thu, 12/17/2009 - 07:56

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

Location/action subject to change. Check back for possible updates. The Time is Now On the Eleventh Day of Every Month We Unite in Action for Truth until Justice Polls demonstrate that 84% of the American public rejects the official account of what happened on September 11th 2001. Polls in Europe, Canada and the Islamic world have yielded similar results. Numerous prominent officials and independent thinkers from around the world have gone on record expressing profound disbelief of the official narrative once examining the evidence objectively. Rapidly growing numbers are convinced that members of the Bush Administration, corporate profiteers, and private interest groups were not only grossly negligent in the days and months leading up to 9/11, but active participants in the attacks themselves. We are in the midst of a mass awakening. 9/11 is the foundational myth upon which the entire fascist agenda is predicated. Every civil liberty curtailed, every passage hacked from the Bill of Rights, every torture camp built by Halliburton/KBR, every child murdered in Iraq, the bailout and deliberate destruction of our economy, the Global "War on Terror"... all of these have but one justification: 9/11. Our leaders have promised us a hundred year war. We are promising them that they will not succeed. In the absence of sane leadership, we intend to do what people have always done to effect positive change: we will mobilize in massive numbers. On the Eleventh Day of Every Month, we call on activists everywhere to take to the streets in the name of truth. Protest: No Thanks, AIPAC!

Wed, 12/09/2009 - 05:21

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

December 15th, 5 PM San Francisco @ Hilton Hotel Protest the AIPAC annual dinner 333 O'Farrell St Protest this gathering for AIPAC as they support a political agenda supporting war and occupation. No Thanks, AIPAC! http://stopaipac.org/... Why this Protest: AIPAC seeks to build US support for Israeli policies, policies of war and endless military occupation. It supports massive annual subsidies by US taxpayers of the Israeli military as it continues to control the lives of millions of Palestinians. In October, AIPAC supported a congressional resolution (H.Res. 867) that sought to quash official United Nations inquiries into Israel's conduct during the war on Gaza last winter. The 22 day military onslaught brought a terrible toll to the 1.5 million people of Gaza, killing over a thousand people including hundreds of children, wounding thousands more, and destroying much of what was left of the civilian infrastructure to care for those that survived. Water treatment plants were damaged. Schools destroyed. A University bombed. Large Food facilities bulldozed into oblivion. It was clearly an act of punishing the whole civilian population. Yet AIPAC has sought, with considerable political success, to get congressional backing to end all legitimate UN Inquiries that will hold Israel accountable for its clear war crimes against the Palestinian people. AIPAC lobbies for Congress to ignore Israel's violations of past agreements with the US and other nations as Israel continues its illegal building program in the West Bank. AIPAC is also very active in supporting a confrontational approach with Iran, supporting sanctions and supporting threats of military intervention. At the same time, AIPAC opposes rational approaches to resolving issues regarding nuclear weapons in the Middle East, including insisting that Israel become part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, despite Israel's massive nuclear arsenal. AIPAC also opposes the concept of a nuclear-free Middle East. Finally, AIPAC is still giving political support to religious fundamentalist organizations, including Rev. Hagee's organization "Christians United For Israel". These extremist organizations sow hatred and intolerance. We will protest AIPAC and its folly and instead call for alternative US policies of support for human rights, international law as the means to a sustainable future. We oppose all US aid to Israel as it continues to oppress Palestinian rights. We support global nuclear disarmament. We support a peaceful future, one that includes equal rights and respect for all the people of the Middle East. Beyond our protest on the 15th, we are urging people to contact as soon as possible their elected political representatives at every level of government: city, state and federal, and urge these politicians not to attend AIPAC festivities. We believe their presence at such events lends credibility to AIPAC that it does not deserve. You can see more of our "No Thanks, AIPAC" campaign. We also have postcards available for people to send. A list of some suggested politicians to contact is here. We urge everyone to attend and for groups to endorse and spread the word on this important protest. Truth Action at the Muse Concert

Sat, 12/05/2009 - 19:03

SF Truth Action - truthaction.org

As many of you know, Matthew Bellamy, frontman for the band Muse, is a vocal supporter of 9/11 Truth. I just watched a video of We Are Change Glasgow distributing Truth information outside of a Muse concert, and they report having a positive and successful outreach. http://www.youtube.co... Although I cannot personally attend this action, I wanted to suggest it in the hope that others might. Muse will be playing at a sold-out show, Live 105's Not So Silent Night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on Friday, December 11. Muse is the headlining band; other bands include AFI, 30 Seconds To Mars, Vampire Weekend, and Metric. The show starts at 6:15pm, so I figured two hours of outreach before the show would be sufficient. Live Nation concert info: http://www.livenation... Muse on Wikipedia: (There used to be references to 9/11 Truth, but they seem to have been removed) http://en.wikipedia.o... http://en.wikipedia.o... From Patriots Question 9/11 ( http://patriotsquesti... ) : http://www.femalefirs... - "Muse frontman Matt Bellamy has sensationally claimed 9/11 was an "inside job", insisting the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon was orchestrated to give America a perfect excuse to invade Iraq. Bellamy is convinced the US government knows more information surrounding the attack on their country in September 2001 than the public is aware of. The outspoken singer says, "September 11 is clearly an inside job, there's massive evidence that suggests that it was either allowed to happen or even worse, deliberately made to happen. "There was a document called Project For The New America Century which was made by neo-Con (right wing) writers in the 90s who supplied most of the agenda that (George W) Bush is putting into place now, which clearly says, 'We need a Pearl Harbor-level of event so we can have an excuse to invade the Middle East."
