Dear President Obama,
I am one of the tens of thousands of men and women who served their country in the 9/11 rescue and recovery mission. Even though the disaster was one of the darkest days in American history, and the conditions severe enough to test the human spirit, I was proud to serve, and my sense of pride and country follows me to this day. However, this fulfilled patriotism has come at a price. You see, Mr. President, I was poisoned during my service-by the air and dust which was declared safe at the time, but which we now know was toxic beyond any environmental disaster in this country's history.
In those somber days as we worked the Pile, my fellow responders and I breathed in untold amounts of asbestos, lead and mercury within the pulverized concrete dust that was as caustic as drain cleaner. We were subjected to deadly fumes of dioxins and furans, of carcinogenic PCB's and PAH's, as 200,000 gallons of ruptured fuel and oil smoldered underneath the rubble on which we toiled. Readings from independent monitoring stations have shown that the Ground Zero fires gave off toxins worse than those from the Kuwait oil fires after the Gulf War, yet most of us labored without protection due to the official declarations of the time.
Now these same men and women--this 9/11 Community of which I am a part--are a group of ravaged and broken people. As of December 2008, 713 have died, and over 20,000 of us are grievously ill, many with aggressive cancers that are felling our ranks in record time as family members stand by helpless and devastated. Respiratory and gastrointestinal disease are also rampant, with again, aggressive and mutated forms that resist treatment, leaving us in the daily throes of discomfort and worry. Neurological disorders, joint and bone disease, heart conditions, auto-immune disease, organ failure, and a host of other ailments plague us as well.
Yet, Mr. President, we are still told to this day that the majority of our illnesses are not due to 9/11, and that we must assume responsibility for our own ailments. However, we beg to differ. The environmental facts speak for themselves: we have been chemically poisoned by 9/11, and have been paying with our lives ever since.
Mr. President, we need help, and we need it now. The existing 9/11 programs have supported us to a degree, but thus far, more monitoring is done than treatment, and we need targeted efforts put in place swiftly to help stem the tide of disease that is sweeping through our community. This aid includes:
- #1 Priority: Passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009--H. R. 847.
- Evaluation and support of therapeutics which show promise in treating 9/11 illness.
- Fast tracking Workers Compensation and disability claims for 9/11 workers.
- Establishment and funding of 9/11 detoxification programs.
- An emergency relief fund for needy 9/11 families.
Mr. President, we have heard you declare publicly that you support 9/11 Health legislation and that you will not forget the men and women of 9/11. Please be true to your word and come to our aid as we came to America's on September 11th and beyond. Our lives, and those of our family members are depending on it.

I am writing to urge you to support the rescue and recovery workers of the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center Attacks. Mr. President, over seven hundred 9/11 workers have already died, and tens of thousands are ill with a host of life-threatening diseases. In addition, many 9/11 workers are being denied benefits and pensions, or have lost jobs, homes, and livelihood. Many 9/11 families cannot afford the basic necessities of life, such as food, gas, clothing, or the payment of household bills.
Mr. President, America’s 9/11 families are in desperate need of appropriate legislation to address this ongoing crisis. Passing H.R. 847: The James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act of 2009 would be a crucial first step in bringing needed relief to this community. If passed, the bill would:
- Provide a stable, ongoing federally-funded monitoring and treatment program for responders and affected community members.
- Fund a national program to care for the over 10,000 responders who hail from outside the NY area--from all 50 states and from all but four Congressional districts.
- Fund ongoing research on WTC-related diseases.
- Reopen the Victim’s Compensation Fund to provide for economic loss and damages.
Mr. President, 9/11 families are in need of your support right now as the 8th anniversary of the event approaches. Please do not let them down--fast-track this bill by putting it as a top legislative priority, and come out publicly in support of the men and women who came out in support of America on September 11th. Not only America’s 9/11 Families--but all American families--are counting on you to do the moral, just, and right thing on this issue.
