Award winning actor Mark Ruffalo says he is “baffled” at the collapse of the twin towers and Building 7 on 9/11 and has called for re-opening the investigation into the attacks, joining Martin Sheen in publicly doubting the government’s official story.

Ruffalo’s notable film roles include Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Academy Award-nominated 2000 film You Can Count on Me and most recently, 2007′s Zodiac. He is a vocal critic of the Iraq war having appeared on Democracy Now and spoken at the October 2006 World Can’t Wait protest in New York City.

In an interview with We Are Change L.A. at an anti-war rally in Los Angeles this past weekend, Ruffalo said he was “baffled” with how the twin towers and Building 7 came down, but cautioned that so much information had been put out that the truth had been “stretched” and that too many people were being distracted by the more “sensational” aspects of some claims made about 9/11 that were being fostered to “discredit the movement.”

Ruffalo also slammed the 9/11 Commission Report.

“The fact that the 9/11 investigation went from the moment the planes hit to the moment the buildings fell and nothing before and nothing after I think makes that investigation completely illegitimate,” said Ruffalo.

“If you’re gonna do a crime investigation, you have to find motive….and we didn’t follow that, it was quickly pushed away,” he added.

Ruffalo concurred that the immediate interference in the crime scene as well as the initial appointment of Henry Kissinger to head the 9/11 Commission were obvious signs that the investigation was compromised, mandating a re-opening of the inquiry.

Martin Sheen Questions Official 9/11 Story Follows in footsteps of son Charlie Sheen, highlights implausible collapse of WTC 7, asks why building was “rigged”

Actor Martin Sheen questioned the official 9/11 story, as well as the collapse of Building 7 and Larry Silverstein’s “pull it” comment during an anti-war march this past weekend in Los Angeles, saying that recent revelations about the attacks had caused him to have doubts.

Sheen was interviewed by We Are Change L.A. along with fellow actor Mark Ruffalo during an event hosted by the ANSWER Coalition at which around 20,000 people attended.

Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning Martin Sheen, star of blockbuster films like Apocalypse Now and hit series The West Wing, follows in the footsteps of his son Charlie Sheen, who publicly spoke of his doubts about the official 9/11 story back in March 2006.

Martin Sheen said that he was dubious about questioning the official story until his son introduced him to new information about the anomalies of what happened on that day.

“Up until last year, I was very dubious,” said Sheen, “I did not want to believe that my government could possibly be involved in such a thing, I could not live in a country that I thought could do that – that would be the ultimate betrayal,” he added.

“However, there have been so many revelations that now I have my doubts, and chief among them is Building 7 – how did they rig that building so that it came down on the evening of the day?” said Sheen.

Sheen also questioned the comments of Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the WTC complex, who told a September 2002 documentary that the decision was made to “pull” Building 7, a demolition industry term for the deliberate implosion of a structure.

“How convenient,” said Sheen, “When did they rig that building? That’s the most interesting question and I have not received a satisfactory answer – nobody could give me an answer to how you rig the building – what a coincidence – two weeks prior and then bring it down on the day, that is the one thing that I have not got a sensible answer about from anyone,” he concluded.

Sheen also stated that NORAD’s failure to follow its standard operating procedure on 9/11 was “something to wonder about”.

Though Fox News and other attack dogs are likely to seize upon Sheen’s comments and run hit pieces, the National Institute of Standards and Technology itself had to admit recently that the total collapse of the twin towers at free fall speed could not be explained.

NIST also promised to investigate whether explosive devices were involved in the collapse of Building 7 in August last year.

The issue of Building 7 stoked controversy earlier this year when archive footage from news networks including BBC and CNN emerged that showed correspondents reporting the collapse the 47-story skyscraper over 20 minutes before it fell, leading some to charge that people with foreknowledge of the collapse were feeding networks a script as the events of 9/11 unfolded.

Remember the exclusive story you aired on Sibel Edmonds, originally on October 27th, 2002, when she was not allowed to tell you everything that she heard while serving as an FBI translator after 9/11 because she was gagged by the rarely-invoked “States Secret Privilege”? Well, she’s still gagged. In fact, as the ACLU first described her, she’s “the most gagged person in the history of the United States of America.”

But if you’ll sit down and talk with her for an unedited interview, she has now told The BRAD BLOG during an exclusive interview, she will now tell you everything she knows.

Everything she hasn’t been allowed to tell since 2002, about the criminal penetration of the FBI where she worked, and at the Departments of State and Defense; everything she heard concerning the corruption and illegal activities of several well-known members of Congress; everything she’s aware of concerning information omitted and/or covered up in relation to 9/11. All of the information gleaned from her time listening to and translating wire-taps made prior to 9/11 at the FBI.

Here’s a handy bullet-point list, as we ran it in March of 2006, for reference, of what she’s now willing to tell you about.

“People say, ‘why doesn’t she just come forward and spill the beans?’ I have gone all the way to the Supreme Court and was shut down, I went to Congress and now consider that shut down,” she told The BRAD BLOG last week when we spoke with her for comments in relation to our story on former House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s original attempt to move a resolution through the U.S. House in 2000 declaring the 1915 massacre of 1.5 million ethnic Armenians in Turkey as “genocide.”

“Here’s my promise to the American Public: If anyone of the major networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FOX — promise to air the entire segment, without editing, I promise to tell them everything that I know,” about everything mentioned above, she told us.

“I can tell the American public exactly what it is, and what it is that they are covering up,” she continued. “I’m not compromising ongoing investigations,” Edmonds explained, because “they’ve all been shut down since.”

“She’s Very Credible”

She has, in fact, spent years taking every reasonable step to see that the information she has goes through the proper channels. The Supreme Court refused to hear her whistleblower lawsuit, even in light of the Department of Justice forcing the removal of both her and her own attorneys from the courtroom when they made their arguments concerning why it was that she still had to remain gagged under the “States Secrets Privilege.”

On the morning that the SCOTUS refused to hear her case, the facade cracked on the front of the building. In a ridiculously ironic metaphor which would have been rejected by any credible screen-writer, a chunk of marble — just above an allegorical statue representing “Order” and just below the words “Equal Justice” — came crashing to the ground.

She has met with, and told her story to, U.S. senators including Republican Charles Grassley and Democrat Patrick Leahy, both of the Senate Judiciary Committee, both who found her extremely credible. 60 Minutes producers may remember when Grassley told them, “Absolutely, she’s credible…And the reason I feel she’s very credible is because people within the FBI have corroborated a lot of her story.”

In fact, the FBI itself has done so. Their Inspector General found her allegations, as described in the unclassified version of his report, to be “credible,” “serious,” and “warrant[ing] a thorough and careful review by the FBI.”

As far back as 2002, Grassley and Leahy co-wrote letters on Edmonds’ behalf to Attorney General John Ashcroft, FBI Director Robert Mueller, and DoJ Inspector General Glenn A. Fine, calling on all of them to take action in respect to the allegations she’s made.

“Certain officials in this country are engaged in treason against the United States and its interests and its national security,” she said during an interview an August 2005 interview on Democracy Now. That comment followed 60 Minutes’ revelation years before alleging that Edmonds had information revealing that a “Turkish intelligence officer” she worked with at the FBI “had spies working for him inside the US State Department and at the Pentagon.”

She’s briefed many legislative offices — as well as the 9/11 Commission — in regard to her claims, and now, she says, she’s even prepared to tell the media “the names of every single Congressional office who has received the names of the witnesses” to the crimes she’s detailed.

When we spoke last week, Edmonds seemed to reserve most of her frustration for Congressman Henry Waxman’s office. Waxman is the Democratic Chairman of the U.S. House Government Reform and Oversight Committee.

After briefing members of his security-cleared staff “inside the SCIF” — a high-security room in the U.S. Capitol, specially created for discussion of highly sensitive information — Edmonds says she was told on several occasions, prior to the 2006 Election, that her case would be one of the first heard in his committee, once he became Chairman.

“I even gave names of former and current FBI agents who were willing to go to Waxman’s office and give more information on all of this,” she said.

“Before the elections, I had a promise from Congressman Waxman’s office.” She claims they told her, before the election, “the only reason they couldn’t hold hearings, was because the Republicans were blocking it.”

“They said ‘your case will be one of the first ones we will hold investigations on,’” she told us. Now, however, since the Democrats have become the majority in the House, Waxman’s office is “going mum.” They won’t even respond to her calls.

The congressman’s office did not respond to several requests for comment on this story.

Two Other “Well-Known” Congressmen

Aside from the allegations she’s already made concerning Hastert, as we reported in some detail in early 2006, following up on a Vanity Fair exposé in 2005, Edmonds says there are at least “two other well-known” members of Congress that she’s prepared to name as well.

“There are other Congressional people, whose names have not come out,” she explained. “As [Waxman's office knows] I’ll be able to give them file numbers and investigations, including investigations by the IRS. I will be giving details one by one, not just allegations.”

“But,” she added, “unfortunately nobody wants to have an investigation like that.”

For the record, she told The BRAD BLOG, the other two “well-known members” are from the House, both Republican, and “one of them is recently no longer there.”

So far, she says, “those names have not been public.”

“Kafka-esque”

Since leaving the FBI, and in the wake of her years-long ordeal, which she frequently describes as “Kafka-esque,” Edmonds has founded the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition.

In addition to the support she has received, at various times, from members of Congress, she’s received a great deal of support from members of the national security whistleblower community and government watchdog organizations.

As we reported last Spring, Veteran FBI counterintelligence agent John Cole has said he’s “talked to people who had read her file, who had read the investigative report, and they were telling me a totally different story” than that given publicly by FBI officials. “They were telling me that Sibel Edmonds was 100 percent accurate,” he said, “management knew that she was correct.”

Famed “Pentagon Papers” whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg has described Edmonds as “extremely credible.” In a 2005 interview on KPFA, Ellsberg said, “FBI agents we’ve talked to have, in every respect that was raised, have confirmed her story – that she’s a very credible witness.”

More than 30 groups, from across the political spectrum — including the Project on Government Oversight (POGO), Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the September 11th Advocates, the Liberty Coalition, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), OMB Watch, Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and People for the American Way (PFAW) — all signed a letter in March of this year calling on the House Oversight Committee to “hold public hearings into the case of FBI Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, and the erroneous use of the State Secrets Privilege to shut down all court proceedings in her case.”

That petition was sent almost precisely one year after The BRAD BLOG originally reported on a public petition to Congress, demanding they hold public hearings. More than 30,000 people, Edmonds says, have now signed that petition since it was first announced.

“Exhausted Every Channel”

In a speech given over the Summer in D.C. at the American Library Association (ALA, video here), Edmonds detailed the “Kafka-esque” nature of her unprecedented gag-order. Among the information still-regarded as “classified” under the States Secret Privelege: the fact that she was a translator for the FBI, where she was born, what languages she speaks, the date of her birth, the universities she attended, and the degrees she earned.

In fact, the interview that CBS’s 60 Minutes aired with her in 2004, was later retroactively classified by the Department of Justice under the same “privilege”!

But enough is enough. She’s now ready to tell all. To the public. But not (yet) to us. She will speak, however, to any broadcast network that would like to have her.

“I have exhausted every channel. If they want to, they can bring criminal charges against someone who divulges criminal activity, and see how far they’re going to get.”

But will any of the corporate mainstream networks take her up on the offer? It’d certainly be an explosive exclusive.

“I don’t think any of the mainstream media are going to have the guts to do it,” she dared them.

So whaddaya say 60 Minutes? We’ve given you scoops before that you ended up turning down — and likely later regretted. Will you be smart enough to take this one?

“You put me on air live, or unedited. If I’m given the time, I will give the American people the exact reason of what I’ve been gagged from saying because of the States Secrets Privilege, and why it is that I’m the most gagged person in the history of the United States.”

“My feeling is that none of them have the guts to do that,” she dared them, before charging, “they are all manipulated.”

“I keep using the word Kafkaesque…” she paused, during her speech at ALA, clearly showing her exasperation, “because…,” she continued slowly, “…I really can’t come up with a better word.”

Smearing a hero of 9/11

There is mounting evidence that the city’s chief medical examiner libeled the memory of Detective James Zadroga by ruling that the cop’s long, arduous service at Ground Zero had nothing to do with his tragic death. Dr. Charles Hirsch appears to have committed a gross injustice that no apology can ever set right.

With the brutal, clinical efficiency of a man accustomed to working with flesh on ice, Hirsch last week summarily notified Zadroga’s family that, to a “certainty beyond doubt,” something other than breathing the toxic remains of the World Trade Center had turned the cop’s lungs to leather. Hirsch didn’t say publicly then what that fatal something might be. But now, the doctor has spoken.

Monstrously, Hirsch said yesterday that, in his opinion, Zadroga brought about his own demise by crushing pill medications and taking them intravenously. Writ large, Hirsch blamed the victim and, even worse, left the lingering, disgraceful implication that Zadroga was a drug abuser.

He wasn’t. And it is a sorry necessity to have to state those words about a dedicated cop and father of a young child, who worked for 450 hours in the thick of the poisonous cloud, began coughing after two weeks and suffered a steady, irrevocable descent to suffocation at age 34. Zadroga died despite excellent medical care, and his autopsy found that his lungs were filled with substances that hung in the air over The Pile. Among them, carbon, silica, calcium phosphate – found in concrete – talc and cellulose.

The New Jersey medical examiner who autopsied Zadroga concluded the toxins destroyed his lungs. Dr. Michael Baden, a former city chief medical examiner who is now the state police forensic pathologist, reviewed and confirmed the autopsy findings. And now Hirsch says that, beyond all question, he knows better.

All agree that crushing pills and injecting the powder can introduce talc and cellulose into the bloodstream. And all agree the substances can damage the lungs. Adding up those facts, and looking at microscopic slides of Zadroga’s tissues, Hirsch says he has proof positive that the fatal injury began with materials in Zadroga’s blood.

Baden, who is not being paid by Zadroga’s family, emphatically differs with Hirsch: “I don’t know what he would have to permit him to make the strong diagnosis he did, and whatever it is, he is wrong.” So much for Hirsch’s “certainty beyond doubt.”

As for substantiating the medical examiner’s judgment, his spokeswoman offered explanations that only made Hirsch’s conduct more outrageous. She said Hirsch is not questioning that Zadroga became ill at Ground Zero; he has only concluded that injecting crushed pills was the intervening cause of death.

Here, then, is Hirsch’s hypothesis for what happened: Zadroga serves his city and country valiantly, becomes agonizingly ill and injects painkillers. This is just a theory, because Zadroga’s family says no such injections ever took place. But let’s say Hirsch is right.

In that event, the truth is Zadroga – desperately ill, fighting for breath, heavily medicated and often out of touch with reality – tried to ease his own suffering as best he could.

Suffering that befell Zadroga only because he responded to 9/11.

Suffering brought on by inhaling the pulverized remains of the fallen twin towers.

Suffering that caused the death of a New York hero.

Suffering that was cavalierly trashed by a medical examiner whose continued tenure in office must be closely reviewed.

Bill Maher faces off with 9/11 Truth Movement LIVE on television.

Six activists managed to get into Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, October 19, 2007, at CBS studios with signs and banners, as well as 9/11 “truth dollars” advertising activist websites. They disrupted the panel discussion segment of the show with statements questioning the official story of 9/11, and they openly challenged Bill Maher to a debate on WTC Building 7.

Los Angeles, California (WeAreChangeLA.org) October 23, 2007 – Maher was talking science during a round table panel discussion when the first activist named Randy stood up, held up his smuggled-in sign reading ‘9/11 is a cover up fraud’ and shouted “Investigate 9/11, Nothing else matters” and other comments to the same effect.

Randy was swarmed by show crew members, and Bill Maher scampered into the audience, put his hands on the back of a crew member shouting, “Out, out, out”.

After making his way back on stage, Maher barely got his mic back on when a second activist, Katy Kurtzman stood up and shouted “What about Building 7? What about Building 7, Bill?” Maher stood up and said “I’ll kick your @ss out of here, too!” and producers proceeded to escort Kurtzman out of the audience.

One of the panelists, Joel Stein, LA Times columnist then jokes “I was only allowed two guests so things should be okay after this.” That’s when the third activist, Peter Thottam challenged Maher once again about Building 7 “Tell us what happened to Building 7, Bill!”

As Peter was grabbed and dragged out of the audience, Maher replied, “You are a nut case… Building 7.” Turning to his panelists, he continued to explain, “You know what that’s all about? Out of all the things I’ve said, and believe me I’ve said a lot of things… that could get my head on a block, the one that they protest about out here is the people who think the World Trade Center was a controlled demolition.” The fourth activist, Lisa shouted from the very back of the audience “It was” and she too was quickly escorted out of the audience.

I had dinner with David Ray Griffin last night.

I helped to plan a speaking engagement in Denver for Griffin on Friday night. Last night there was a dinner to thank the volunteers who helped make the event happen. I sat at a random long table that only had two people at it when I sat. There were several other tables where he could have sat, but I was delighted when he chose a seat directly across the table from me. After hearing him speak on Friday, and then getting to know him more personally, I’ve moved me much further from my LIHOP position toward an MIHOP position.

The Friday event was hosted by a number of organizations: 9-11 Visibility, Be The Change, Iliff’s Justice and Peace Studies Program, and the organization where I work, The Veterans of Hope Project. Griffin packed the house. There were 200 chairs set up, but we had an overflow room that held another 50 or 60 people, and there were also 20 or so people sitting on the floor in the back of the hall to hear Griffin speak.

The event was MC’d by my boss, Dr. Vincent Harding. Harding rose to prominence in the 1960′s by working in the Southern Freedom Movement with Martin Luther King, Jr. In fact, Harding wrote King’s famous speech, Beyond Vietnam, so he knows firsthand about the government discrediting dissenters, as well as the complexities and ramifications of America’s military-industrial complex. One of the most lasting images I’ll take with me from Griffin’s talk is a poster he had on stage, his only prop. It showed a dog blindfolded by an American flag. This represents the blind loyalty of Americans to question that their government could be evil enough to perpetrate attacks on its own citizens. It has long amazed me that so many people have no problem at all believing that the Bush administration is actively working to curb civil liberties, gut the Constitution, staff the Department of Justice with loyal brown shirts, that they lied to get us into Iraq, that they outed Valerie Plame, that Cheney held secret energy meetings to strategize how to get Middle East oil, and the list goes on. But perpetrate attacks on its own citizenry? Blasphemous conspiracy theory, detractors cry! But to my mind, it’s just not that far of a leap.

Artist Releases Original Painting, “With Liberty and Justice for All” in Response to the Cover-ups and Lies of 9/11.

Port Clinton, Ohio — October 23, 2007 — Nathan Janes, who has become known for his fun and light-hearted renderings of man’s best friend, has released his newest painting of a much more serious subject matter. The painting, titled “With Liberty and Justice for All,” represents a movement within the United States and abroad that seeks answers to questions about the catastrophic events that occurred on September 11, 2001. Within the last two years a number of celebrities and public officials have come forward to support the growing movement including Charlie Sheen, Rosie O’Donnell, Mos Def, Gov. Jesse Ventura, Aaron Russo, Raymond L. McGovern, and many more

Janes says that he was inspired to complete this painting in order to make more people aware of the questions that have remained unanswered by the 9/11 Commission Report and by officials within the federal government. “Once you look closely at the events that happened on September 11, a lot of holes appear in the story,” Janes says. “So many people have died as a result of this event and we all deserve to know the truth about the events that led up to 9/11.”

The painting depicts a dog wearing a stars-and-stripes blindfold and surrounded by a ring of seven stars. Janes explains that, “The stars represent World Trade Center Building Seven, which mysteriously fell on September 11 even though it was not hit by an airplane nor sustained any major fires or damage from the collapse of WTC Buildings One and Two.”

The patriotic blindfold represents the apprehension that many Americans have in accepting that the government could be capable of intentionally harming its citizens. Also depicted in the painting is the ‘All Seeing Eye’ and stealth bombers, which Janes says represent the power that the government has seized over the American people in modern times.

In an effort to increase awareness, Janes has posted facts and resources about the 9/11 Truth Movement on his website, www.PopARF.com.

Disrupting Life as Usual at ‘Real Time’ and Beyond

America’s Congressional approval rating is currently at record lows, and even those who believed a Democratic majority would rein in a rogue imperial Executive have finally succumbed to the realization that things are definitely not getting better. Congress has failed in its duty to exact any accountability, and continues to do so, capitulating to Executive authority at every turn. Millions of Americans who have persistently lobbied their elected officials, signed petitions, or visited congressional offices find that their concerns consistently fall on deaf ears.

Millions have taken to the streets to protest abhorrent policies and failings of this government, believing that a significant show of numbers would have impact. Their demands have been ignored and dismissed, and their numbers incorrectly reported low by the media, often by tens of thousands, if reported at all.

Likewise, those who have turned to the Judiciary find they’ve been unable to achieve accountability there, either. 9/11 families are still being derailed six years later, and 9/11 responders’ lawsuits are similarly waylaid at every turn, federal whistleblowers have been summarily dismissed and gagged, and active duty military and veterans are unable to pursue legal recourse when needed. Even attorneys with the courage to represent “enemy combatants,” who are few, have been harassed and threatened for their efforts.

When we pressure the media for accurate reporting and investigation, they churn out articles, talk shows, and “historical” documentaries dismissing the messengers out of hand, while ignoring facts or evidence that undermine the veracity of what’s accepted to be true; for instance, the assumed truth of the official story on 9/11. In this way, what used to be known as the Fourth Estate persuades media consumers to dismiss their troubling questions and get on with “life as usual.” Because they control our public airwaves, they shape the national discourse by relegating these concerns to “kooks on the fringe.” In reality, however, one look at polling demographics proves the millions of people who actually are discussing these important issues, well outside the media-ordained constraints, represent a broad cross-section of Americans for whom the accumulation of haunting doubts about the direction of our country is fast reaching a powerful crescendo.

Some of these companies even have budgets in the billions, and not surprisingly these budgets have the power to influence TV producers to create television that suits their agendas.

And, frequently, these agendas are not aligned with your best interests.

Visibility 9-11 Begins Special Report Coverage of the OKC Bombing

Referred to by many as The Prelude to 9-11, the events of April 19th, 1995 are significant in that we would see many of the same techniques used to cover-up the OKC bombing as we would later see in 2001 after September 11th. The bombing in Oklahoma City can be seen as a test put forth to the American people, to see how much the “powers that be” could get away with. We at Visibility 9-11 urge all of our listeners to research and study the OKC bombing case and to help spread the word about the ongoing 12+ year cover-up in Oklahoma.

We begin our Special Report on the OKC bombing with Oklahoma City Bombing survivor VZ Lawton. Mr. Lawton discusses his experiences on April 19, 1995 when multiple bombs ripped through the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City. One hundred and sixty eight people were killed that day in an event which has been widely compared to the events of 9-11, some referring to the bombing as the ‘Prelude to 9-11′. 9/11 – The Twin Towers and Common Sense

Before the roof of the North tower of the World Trade Centre became hidden in dust it was falling at a rate which would have brought it to the ground in 10.5 seconds. The US administration expects us to believe that this fall rate is reasonable for a fire and plane damaged building. For comparison the roof on the right in this drawing, freely falling in a vacuum, would take 9.2 seconds.

Data published by NIST shows that the steel was not hot enough for the collapse to begin. There are also engineers who have worked out that, even if collapse did begin at the damaged level, it would not continue, but would quickly come to a halt.

That may be hard to validate, unless you can deal with complex calculations, but what about this time difference, just 1.3 seconds? Does not ordinary common sense tell you that the block on the left will be slowed down if it has to crush its way through over 90 storeys of cold steel and concrete? Would it not take more than 1.3 seconds longer than the one on the right, freely falling?

Does this not imply that the undamaged, unheated lower part of the building suddenly lost structural strength in some way? Is there any explanation other than explosives that could account for this sudden loss of strength?

No steel framed building has ever collapsed due to fire except on that day, when three tall buildings came down, and they came down impossibly fast.

One of these three buildings, WTC 7, was not hit by a plane and showed little evidence of fire. It took no more than half a second longer than free fall to collapse. This building was occupied by the FBI, the CIA and the DoD. Is it feasible that al-Qaeda could have got past all these sensitive organizations to lay explosives without inside help?

It is instructive to note that there were four other buildings at the WTC which were badly damaged by fire and falling debris but behaved in the usual way: they did not collapse.

As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air – however slight – lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.

I was born the very day World War II ended. My fellow postwar “Baby Boomers” grew up on old black and white documentaries of that war and the events leading up to it. But those films never really answered the most important question, a question that has nagged me, and I suspect most of my generation

How did Germany and the German people become the Mrs. O’Leary’s cow of an entire continent? How could a culture, re-formed during the Renaissance, create a horror like Auschwitz?

How does something that extraordinary happen? It’s a question that has not only burdened American Baby Boomers, but three generations of postwar Germans as well. But for them it’s much more than just a historical curiosity. For postwar Germans it’s also been a nagging sense of collective guilt – guilt about events they had nothing to do with, but guilt nonetheless. It’s a guilt built on the realization that their parents and grand parents either participated in, supported and/or enabled what happened over half a century ago — or, at the very least, did nothing to prevent or stop it.

Of course the fascist rulers of the Third Reich ruled with a heavy hand. So it’s not hard to understand why so many Germans simply laid low rather than oppose the regime.

“Nazi terror from above and the demise of the rule of law started just a few days after Hitler’s assumption of power in January 1933. The penalties of opposition became higher and higher. In the first nine months alone, at least 100,000 people, most of them leftist Germans, were thrown into hastily erected concentration camps. Others ended up in ordinary prisons and many died. Countless more were roughed up by rampaging brownshirts in broad daylight or taken into police custody on trumped-up political charges. By 1936, a brutal police state had penetrated virtually all spheres of life.” ( New York Times books.)

While the rules have tightened here since 9/11, we’ve not experienced anything near that scale. Speaking out is remains a survivable exercise.

Which begs the question; what will be our excuse? How will we explain the things we’ve allowed this administration to get away with — the torture, the “renditions,” the secret prisons, the warrant-less wiretapping, the lies we and our media allowed to stand? What are we going to tell our grand children when they ask us what the hell we were thinking, feeling and doing while all that was afoot?

I understand it’s against the rules of polite society to recklessly throw the “f” word around by comparing anything that’s happening today to the kind of atrocities that occurred under Hitler. It”s even worse to compare any contemporary American political/religious/social leader to Hitler.

So I won’t. I won’t go that far, because it hasn’t gone that far – yet.
