Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is President Obama

Obama backs 9/11 health bill

Barack Obama’s campaign said last week that he supports an $11 billion bill to provide care and monitoring to anyone who is having health problems because of 9/11.

“Yes, Obama does support the bill,” Blake Zeff, New York communications director for the presidential campaign, wrote in an email to Downtown Express last Thursday. Obama’s support for the bill was first reported at downtownexpress.com later that day, Oct. 2.

The bill would reopen the 9/11 victims compensation fund to provide health money for people who can demonstrate health problems from the toxic chemicals and dust that covered Lower Manhattan after 9/11.

There have been several deaths attributed to 9/11, and doctors from Mount Sinai, St. Vincent’s and other medical centers say they have treated many people who worked at ground zero or lived or worked in the area who are suffering from respiratory and other ailments they believe were caused by the attack.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, Obama’s primary opponent, has led the fight in the Senate to get a measure passed, although she has not introduced a new bill. She is working on a bill that can pass the Senate, but advocates don’t expect it to be introduced until next year.

A House version of the bill failed to pass two weeks ago when Mayor Mike Bloomberg withdrew his support after raising objections to the city’s financial obligations.

The New York Times reported that Obama and Clinton spoke at length on the Senate floor last Wednesday during the debate on the Wall St. bailout package, but it’s unclear if the 9/11 health bill was discussed.

Eric Bederman, a Clinton spokesperson, released this statement: “Senator Clinton continues to work with her colleagues on the HELP Committee to develop a bipartisan long-term solution for the health needs faced by responders, workers, volunteers, residents, students and others who were affected by the World Trade Center attacks.”

The Democratic presidential nominee’s decision to support the bill, coincidental or not, does appear to have been made around the time he spoke with Clinton. Zeff declined to comment on Obama’s position until the day after the two Senators spoke.

The Express contacted the campaign after learning that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, expressed support for workers, volunteers and residents suffering from 9/11 when she visited the Tribute WTC Visitor Center two weeks ago.

She did not say she was supporting the House bill, and a McCain-Palin spokesperson said last month that Sen. John McCain would wait until a Senate bill is introduced before he considered whether or not to support it.

Two advocates of the House bill, both strong supporters of Clinton’s presidential campaign, said they were glad to get Obama’s support.

Catherine McVay Hughes, a Lower Manhattan resident who has worked with Clinton’s office on 9/11 health concerns, said: “I would have been surprised if Sen. Obama did not support the bill but it’s terrific that he’s formally committed to supporting it at this particular time.”

“The news that Senator Obama supports our 9/11 health bill is very welcome,” U.S Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a bill sponsor, said in a statement. “This isn’t a partisan issue, but a matter of providing much-needed health care and compensation for our first responders and community members who have suffered because of 9/11. I hope Senator McCain will announce his support for the bill as well.”

Thank You For Donating

Another fund-raiser has come and gone. I wanted to say thank you to every person that donated something. Either to the chip-in account, or directly to the FealGood Foundation. You have participated in an absolute good.

According to reports, the legislation to give the first responders, and New Yorkers the help that they need has been “shelved” which means they may look at it again in the future. One of the first things the new President should do is champion this cause. Not doing so is disgraceful in my eyes. Again, thank you to everyone that donated.

The “Congress Is Shameful” 9/11 First Responder Fund-Raiser

Do you see this? Do you see it? Make sure you look at it REALLY hard. The FealGood Foundation went through the trouble of making a movie called “Save The Brave” for the purposes of influencing our elected officials in Washington D.C. so they pass a bill to make sure they get the help they need.

Instead, they cared more about bailing out the Wall Street “fat cats,” than helping our heroes at a time when they need us. Just as we needed them.

That is unforgivable. But what should we expect from a Congress that cares more about the corporations than the people?

Please give anything you can. $1, $5, $1,000,000.00 (I’m looking at you Rosie, and Charlie). Either do it through this fund-raiser, or do it by directly contacting the FealGood Foundation. Please just give something.

Thank you.

One of the responders in the film died not long ago. His name was Greg Quibell. This fund-raiser is dedicated to he and his family. Rest in peace Greg.

All proceeds minus the paypal % will be donated to the FealGood Foundation.

Documentary Dedicated To Late 9/11 First Responder

My sincerest condolences to the Quibell family. I haven’t held a fund-raiser for the responders in quite a while. Mostly what I’ve done is convince others that their efforts should include fund-raising for the first responders. Mark Peters told me the other day that he makes an effort every month to at least send something to the FealGood Foundation. That sounds like an excellent idea, and one that everyone should try to do. - Jon

Racked by pain and the ravages of leukemia, first responder Gregory Quibell of North Babylon allowed film crews to record poignant moments of his life.

For weeks, his visits to doctors and his struggles to pay medical bills were captured for a documentary called “Save the Brave,” which premiered last night at the Bellmore Theatre in Bellmore.

The film’s opening is dedicated to Quibell, 53, who died Wednesday night at his home, friends said. The film features three other first responders living with Sept. 11-related illnesses.

9/11 “Wall Of Heroes” To Include Sick Cops

NY Post: City Will Honor 8 Officers Who Succumbed To Illnesses Related To Ground Zero Dust

Source: cbsnews.com

NEW YORK, April 28, 2008

(CBS) New York City’s 9/11 “Wall Of Heroes” will now include names of police officers who died well after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The city will honor eight officers who succumbed to illnesses related to working amid the toxic debris at ground zero, the New York Post reports.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg will preside over a May 9 ceremony paying tribute to eight fallen officers who died from a litany of diseases linked to their work at the site of the World Trade Center, the Post reports.

One of those officers will be Det. James Zadroga, who died of a respiratory disease in 2006 after spending more than 400 hours sifting through the smoldering ruins at ground zero.

“It’s a bittersweet victory,” Joseph Zadroga, James’s father, told CBS News.com.

“It’s joyful but I’d rather have him here,” he said. “I know it’s something that Jimmy would want.”

James Zadroga was the first NYPD officer to have his death directly linked to his work at ground zero. Subsequently, he emerged as a symbol for the plight of thousands whose health rapidly deteriorated after their long days toiling in the rubble at ground zero.

Last May, a woman who died of lung disease five months after Sept. 11, 2001 was added to the medical examiner’s list of attack victims. It marked the first time the city officially linked a death to the toxic dust caused by the World Trade Center’s collapse. However, the city has long resisted adding names of sick 9/11 responders who died to the official victim’s list - despite mounting medical evidence that suggests a strong link.

Of the 70,000 people taking part in Mount Sinai Medical Center’s World Trade Center health study, 85 percent are suffering some kind of respiratory problem. Medical experts now say the toxic cloud sparked at ground zero has not only caused severe breathing problems in the short term but also will likely spawn diseases like cancer in the years to come. The mounting medical evidence has put pressure on lawmakers to fund monitoring and treatment for sick responders.

In addition to Zadroga, the Post reports that those receiving plaques on the wall include police officers James Godbe, Thomas Brophy, Ronald Weintraub and Angelo Peluso and Detectives John Young, Kevin Hawkins, and Robert Williamson.

HACKENSACK, N.J., April 25 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Over 2,000 motorcycles are expected to roll past New York’s “Ground Zero” on Saturday, May 10, as they participate in the “Freedom Run” motorcycle rally and festival. Riding side-by-side, the motorcycles are anticipated to stretch for five miles and will pay tribute to the 9/11 first responders of the FealGood Foundation who are now gravely ill as a result of their service at the site of the World Trade Center collapse.

Caption: FealGood Foundation”I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from the motorcycle community. We are grateful for the support of Bergen Harley-Davidson, and pledge that every dollar raised will help give dignity to a 9/11 responder who has been forgotten by their government,” says John Feal, president and founder of the FealGood Foundation. The nonprofit organization advocates and raises money for the 40,000 who came from all over America and the world to do search, recovery and clean up at Ground Zero, 70 percent of whom are now sick or have died.

Leading the motorcycles will be NYFD Engine #343, named in honor of the 343 NYC firefighters who perished in the attacks, which will be ridden my numerous rescue workers and first responders. The run will depart from the Hackensack Court House, 10 Main Street, at 11:00 a.m., and travel across the George Washington Bridge before passing the Ground Zero.

At the site, motorcyclists will pay homage to a police and fire department color guard before proceeding through the Holland Tunnel and out to Liberty Island. The pack arrive at Liberty State Park at roughly 1:30 and take part in a festival of food, live music by The Rolling Bones, motorcycle high wire thrill show, fly-over by the War Birds historic military aircraft, and more.

“This is an unprecedented event here in the New York and New Jersey area,” says Liz DiGennaro of Bergen Harley-Davidson-Buell, sponsor of the event. “We hope it will bring attention to the real American heroes who spent days and months sifting through the rubble of the burning buildings looking for survivors and bringing dignity to those who perished.”

The police-escorted run and festival are free and all models of bikes are welcome. For more information or to register call 201-843-6930 or visit www.FealGoodFoundation.com.

Rep. Nadler: Decision In 9/11 Lawsuit Highlights Need For Federal Action

CONGRESSMAN JERROLD NADLER
8th Congressional District of New York

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, April 22, 2008

CONTACT: Shin Inouye, 202-225-5635

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), chair of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties today issued the following statement regarding the Second Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision that former Environmental Protect Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman is immune from liability for false statements she made about air quality and public safety after the collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001:

“I am deeply disappointed with the Second Circuit’s decision. There is a mountain of evidence demonstrating that Ms. Whitman and the Bush administration mislead the public about air quality in the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center. By falsely assuring the public that the air was safe to breathe - when all the evidence indicated that it was in fact extremely hazardous - she caused thousands of residents, workers, and first responders to suffer injury and, in some cases, death due to unnecessary exposure to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings. Much of this evidence has been made public in hearings held last year by Senator Clinton and me.

Reps. Nadler, Lofgren Investigate Status Of Compensation For 9/11 Illnesses

These hearings apparently were explosive. A Republican shill named Rep. Darrell Issa had a few things to say. For instance, “It’s very simple: I can’t vote for additional money for New York if I can’t see why it would be appropriate to do this every single time a similar situation happens, which quite frankly includes any urban terrorist. It doesn’t have to be somebody from al Qaeda. It can be someone who decides that they don’t like animal testing at one of our pharmaceutical facilities.” Also, the dust wasn’t so bad. “It simply was an aircraft, residue of the aircraft and residue of the materials used to build this building.” If anyone can find the video of these proceedings which were apparently on C-SPAN, it would be much appreciated. - Jon
